Specialized Occupational Therapy Care
What is Hand Therapy?
Hand therapy is a specialized area of rehabilitation provided by an occupational therapist with advanced training in conditions affecting the hand, wrist, forearm, and elbow. It combines expert clinical knowledge with individualized treatment to help you regain strength, mobility, and function after injury, surgery, or the onset of a chronic condition.
At Healthy Body Physical Therapy, our hand therapy services are designed to get you back to doing what matters most — whether that's gripping a golf club, typing at work, picking up your child, or simply opening a jar without pain.

What To Expect
Your first visit begins with a thorough evaluation — your therapist will assess your range of motion, strength, sensation, and how your condition affects your daily life. From there, a personalized treatment plan is built around your specific goals and timeline.
Sessions typically last 45 to 60 minutes and are with your therapist the entire time. Each visit may include hands-on manual techniques, therapeutic exercises, and education about your condition and recovery. If a custom splint is needed, your therapist will fabricate it right there during your session — molded specifically to your hand for the best fit and support. You'll also receive a home exercise program tailored to reinforce what you're working on in the clinic.
Most patients are seen 2 to 3 times per week, though visit frequency is always based on your individual needs and where you are in the healing process. Every part of your care is customized — because no two hands and no two recoveries are the same.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is a custom splint and will I need one? A custom splint is a thermoplastic device molded directly to your hand during your visit for support, protection, or positioning. Not everyone needs one — your therapist will determine if a splint is part of your treatment plan.
- Do you need a referral? No. You can contact us directly to schedule an evaluation.
- What's the difference between hand therapy and regular PT? Hand therapy is provided by an occupational therapist with specialized training focused specifically on the hand and upper extremity — a level of focused expertise that general PT doesn't typically cover.
- Will Hand Therapy hurt? Some discomfort is normal, especially early in recovery, but your therapist will always work within your tolerance and adjust as needed.
- Do you accept insurance for hand therapy? Yes. Currently Healthy Body Physical Therapy accepts insurance for hand therapy. Our front office team is happy to verify your specific benefits, explain coverage, and answer any questions.
